Oral Health During Pregnancy

Comprehensive Dental Support for Expectaning Mothers

Pregnancy is a time of significant change, and your oral health is no exception. Fluctuations in hormone levels can increase your risk for dental issues, particularly gum disease, which is why maintaining excellent oral hygiene and regular dental visits is an important part of your prenatal care. At Hillcrest Dental Group, we are committed to helping you maintain optimal oral health throughout your pregnancy in a safe, comfortable environment.

Why Dental Care Matters During Pregnancy

Oral health is closely linked to overall health. Maintaining a clean, disease-free mouth during pregnancy may contribute to better health outcomes for both you and your baby. Hormonal changes can make your gums more sensitive to plaque, increasing the risk of inflammation, bleeding, and infection.

Routine dental examinations and cleanings during pregnancy are both safe and recommended. Please inform our team if you are pregnant, and let us know of any health or medication updates prior to your visit.

Common Dental Concerns During Pregnancy

  • Pregnancy Gingivitis

    • Many expecting mothers experience red, swollen, or bleeding gums during pregnancy—a condition known as pregnancy gingivitis. This is a mild form of gum disease triggered by hormonal changes that enhance the body’s inflammatory response to plaque. If left untreated, it can progress to more serious periodontal disease.

  • Pregnancy Tumours (Pyogenic Granulomas)

    • Non-cancerous growths may appear along the gumline, typically during the second trimester. While harmless and often temporary, they can cause discomfort and may bleed easily. Removal is only necessary if they interfere with eating, hygiene, or comfort.

  • Medications and Safety Considerations

    • Routine dental care—including cleanings, exams, and minor treatments—is generally safe during all stages of pregnancy. If a dental procedure requires medication (such as antibiotics or anesthetics), our team will collaborate with your physician to ensure all treatments are appropriate for your pregnancy stage.

    • Please notify us of any prescription or over-the-counter medications you are taking, and report any recent changes in your medical history or physician recommendations.

  • Dental X-Rays During Pregnancy

    • Dental X-rays may occasionally be necessary during pregnancy to diagnose urgent conditions. When required, your safety is our priority. We use highly localized digital imaging along with lead aprons and thyroid collars to minimize exposure and protect both you and your developing baby.

Oral Hygiene Recommendations for Expecting Mothers

  • Brush twice daily with a fluoride toothpaste

  • Floss between your teeth once per day

  • Maintain a balanced, low-sugar diet

  • Limit snacking between meals

  • Continue with scheduled dental cleanings and exams

  • Rinse with a baking soda solution (1 tsp baking soda in 1 cup of water) if experiencing frequent vomiting due to morning sickness
